Metadata description
Archaeo3Data is an integrative resource that merges mostly very heterogeneous metadata descriptions of individual archaeological artefacts. This metadata structure is described in detail in the individual resources, currently the platforms:
NEOFIG.
Archaeo3Data is intended not only for specialists, but also for all researchers or students interested in the subject area, and it will also find its use among the more proficient general public.
Archaeo3Data is continuously updated to as individual platforms are added to the system.
Browsing and searching the database
Platforms
By selecting the "Platforms" link in the main navigation menu, a specific platform is selected, the system goes to its interface, where it works only with the set of artefacts defined by the platform. To work with all artefacts, you need to return to the Archaeo3Data system.
Browsing
Select the "Browse" link in the main navigation menu to view the entire contents of the database. Individual records are represented by a preview of the selected photograph and a heading made up of the artefact's category and some other characteristics (ussualy artefact code a some basic data). Using the "Sort by" (and "Order") option, records can be sorted according to the selected parameter. This parameter is used as a header to distinguish between the different sets of artefacts.
Searching
The search form available via the "Search" option in the main navigation menu allows you to enter a structured query with several parameters. The search is guided by the following general principles:
- all strings are automatically expanded to the right (e.g., entering conservat will find conservate, conservator, conservatory, etc.);
- individual fields are linked by the AND operator (e.g. entering stove tile in the Artefact category field and Brno in the Site field will find records containing both values)
- in fields where multiple values can be selected from drop-down menus, these values are concatenated with the OR operator (e.g. selecting the values Brno and Morava in the Site field will find records that contain at least one of these two values)
- to increase the relevance of search results, a phrase can be used, i.e. the search term can be enclosed in quotation marks to find the exact string (e.g. "upper leg")
The meaning of the individual items in the search form is as follows:
- Any term: searches for any string anywhere in the database.
- Platform: limit your search to a specific platform.
- Artefact category: type of object according to the established taxonomy.
- Relative datation: general notation of the time unit, e.g. Neolithic.
- Timespane: the period from the initial year (»From) to the final year (»To); values BC are entered with a minus sign.
- Site: the archaeological site where the artefact was found.
- City: the village or town where the artefact was found.
- Ownership: the institution that holds the artefact.
- Geolocation Radius: enter a map point in the form of GPS coordinates and the maximum distance from that point.
- Geolocation Boundary: Enter four GPS values to define a map quadrangle that determines the location of artifacts.
